Before you begin to panic and wonder what you need to do, below, you will see some tips for assess storm damage to your roof.

1. Take a look at the roof.

One of the first things you want to do is take a look at the roof from the outside. Note if you see anything of concern such as a gutter hanging down or a large object on top of the roof. You want to make sure there are no trees lying on top of the roof either. Keep a pen and piece of paper with you so you can write down all of the areas you are concerned about.

2. Are there any shingles on the ground?

Take a walk around the perimeter of your property and look for any shingles that may have blown off during the storm. You will be able to spot the shingles as soon as you see them and you should collect them and count how many you have.

3. Venture onto the roof.

Now it is time to take a ladder and climb up it to see what you can see. Once you get to the top of the ladder, look at the roof, but do not climb onto it yet. Assess the roof and see if you see any damaged areas or areas that look like they are in disarray. You should note if there is any debris or standing water on the roof and how much.

Also check to see if there are any large patches of loose shingles or shingles that have fallen off from the roof itself.

4. Check inside for leaks.

Take a walk around the inside of your home and begin looking for any brown spots, soft spots, or wet spots on the ceiling. If there was enough rain, your roof may have even sprung a leak and you may have needed to catch the water in a bucket. Make note of these things as they are important.
