3 Things to Ask for Before You Hire a Roofing Contractor

Your roof looks like it needs a lot of work or maybe you want to replace the old one with a brand new one. It is a great idea to start searching for a roofing contractor to do the maintenance for you if you do not feel comfortable or do not have the experience of being up on a roof. The problem of finding a contractor does not have to be so challenging if you ask yourself some basic questions about the people you hire. You are going to want to make sure the contractor has liability insurance, is local to your home or at least not too far away, and the roofer should be able to communicate well to you.

  1. Does he have Insurance?

Working on a roof can be a dangerous place to work, it is important to make sure that the contractor you hire to do some maintenance on your roof has liability insurance. If an accident were to happen while he was fixing your roof, you would not want to be responsible for all of his medical bills and well-being while he is doing some handyman work. You could even ask to see the insurance certificate and call the insurance company to make sure everything is up to date and legit.

  1. Is he Local to the Area?

You probably are not going to hire just any old maintenance worker by picking a name out of a hat, especially when there are so many out there that can’t be trusted. You want to find somebody that has reputable work and can get the job done, so a great place to start is by asking your neighbors and community if they have a recommendation for a contractor. On the plus side, if the contractor is local, the commuting time will be less than if he was out of the area. Travel time can cut down on labor time in the long run.

  1. Is he Good at Communicating?

Communication is the key to a lot of different types of businesses. As for a contractor, you want to know what time he is going to show up to start working, you want to know how long the maintenance is going to take and you also want him to communicate any issue that may occur along the way. You may not speak the same roofing language as the contractor does, but you should still know and understand what is happening to your own home. It is important that he keeps you in the loop of the progress on the project.

Hiring a contractor to do the roof maintenance can be a little bit tricky. But just asking yourself some simple questions about what you are looking for in a roofing contractor can make a difference. It is important that you understand what you need out of a contractor. Before just hiring the guy next door, take a moment and find out if the contractor has insurance if he has to travel far to and from the work site and if he can fit your communication needs.
